Frank William Topham
Large oil painting on canvas by Francis William Warwick Topham. He was born in London in 1838 and began studying art at an early age with his father, Francis W. Topham (1808-1877), one of England’s outstanding watercolour artists of the nineteenth century. He then studied at the Royal Academy Schools and at the Atelier Gleyre in Paris. He lived and painted in both Italy and France.
Topham began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1863, his beautifully detailed genre and historical oils and watercolours were well received, and he was elected to the New Society of Watercolours in 1879 as well as the Royal Institute of Painters in Oils in 1883. Indistinctly signed bottom right.
